Dog rescue discussion:: New to Shelter Helper
I found this site a couple days ago whilst googleing Rescued dogs.
In the summer of 2001, we homed a rescue dog, she wasn't actually the one we were going out to see, but my daughter, then aged 10, fell in love with her. We named her Trixie and she was a collie X, rescued from a car boot sale in Ireland and brought to the UK. She was about 16 weeks of age, very thin and of course very weak. Over a period of time with lots of love and care, she blossomed into a beautiful dog. Very good tempered, never barked at people or other dogs, ever jumped all over people. She was a total gem. I say she was, because, 1 month tomorrow, we had to make a heart wrenching decision of putting her to rest.
Last October she same down with AIHA, I had never heard of this disease before. She was put on steriods and other medication to protect her stomach lining. Her blood was becoming very low, her rbc were being distroyed and not rebuilding. Last January she spent 1 week in Bristol hospital, she had a blood transfusion and other tests.
She began to pick up in March, her PCV had risen to 36%, quite a jump from the 11% she was.
I noticed a difference in Trixie during the 1st week in April, she seemed to be going downhill. Apparently she had developed Lymphoma, it flared up when the steriods were reduced after 5 months, it hit her hard and fast. Our vet told us he would have been surprised if she make it through the weekend. We didn't want her to suffer, we knew she wouldn't get better and we loved her enough to let her go.
I'll post a link where there are a few photos of Trixie, they were taken last summer and just a short walk from where we live.
We scattered some of her Ashes along the grassy banks she loved to play on, the water where she loved to swim.
We miss her greatly and feel blessed she entered our lives.

http://triciaa.myphotoalbum.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=album01

We hope to be able to offer our home to another rescued doggie, not as a replacement for Trixie, but to be able to give a life as good as what Trixie had.
Tricia

Dog rescue discussion:: Site now up and running again!!!
Apologies to everyone who has had trouble logging on to Shelter Helper this past week. The site's web host made some updates and these updates conflicted with the way the site worked. Thanks dot5hosting for getting the site up and going again.

Things now seem to be working ok - let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks for your patience.

Dog rescue discussion:: European Convention For The Protection Of Pet Animals, Petition to the government to sign up
"The Convention is based on the principle that pet animals should not be abandoned, nor be caused unnecessary pain, suffering or distress. It stipulates minimum standards to which national governments should give effect, with respect to pet animals kept in households, or in any establishment for trading or commercial breeding and boarding, or in animal sanctuaries. It also makes provision with respect to stray animals and humane education programs"

http://www.animallaw.info/treaties/itceceets125.htm

Petition - http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/petanimals/ - Deadline 26th March 08
